About Us

Sunrise Service is celebrated by many denominations of the Christian Church. The outdoor worship service takes place at sunrise on Easter Sunday to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The first sunrise service was held in 1732 by the Monrovia Church in Germany. The annual tradition was soon spread around the world by the Monrovian missionaries.

The significance of sunrise services isn’t rooted in getting up early to watch the sunrise—its meaning can be found in Scripture.

“When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb.” – Mark 16:1-2 ESV

This service is a representation of what happened over 2,000 years ago when Mary, the mother of Jesus, discovered that Jesus had done what He said He would do: rise from the tomb to resurrected life.

Sometimes the world around us can seem very dark,

but in Christ, we have the light of hope and new life!

So, as we face the east to witness the sunrise, let us remember the words of the prophet Isaiah: “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.” (Isaiah 9:2)

Sometimes the world around us can seem very dark, but in Christ, we have the light of hope and new life!
